Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of studying at a UTC?

Courses offer practical as well as academic studies. Employers help shape the curriculum and get to know students on work placements, and students can progress to higher-level apprenticeships, employment or university.

What are typical class sizes at UTC Heathrow?

In Year 10 and 11 class sizes are kept as small as possible, approximately 20-25. In Sixth Form, A-level classes are approximately 15-20, while technical qualification group sizes depend on the unit.

What is your catchment area?

A 12-mile radius catchment from Northwood Hills, including the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and parts of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Why start in Year 10?

The extended offering at a UTC provides extra teaching for every two years a student is with us, due to the longer working day, giving more time to develop skills employers require.

I have submitted an application, what next?

On receipt of your application form we will send you an acknowledgement and then invite you to meet with us.

Are there any fees?

No – UTCs are free.

What is the pastoral care like at UTC Heathrow?

We have a pastoral support manager for Years 10 and 11, and one for Sixth Form.

Are free school meals available?

All pupils eligible for free school meals have that entitlement.

Is the UTC subject to Ofsted and league tables?

Yes.

Is it just for boys?

No. While there is a high percentage of boys, female student numbers are growing each year, and there are special events to encourage women into science, technology, engineering and maths.

Am I allowed to leave my old school?

The government sends a letter to families each year explaining that students may switch schools for Year 10 if they choose to.
